‘There's A Reason It Isn't In The
Movie,' Quentin Tarantino Says of The OUATIH Novel's Wildly Different Ending –
Exclusive
There are
several reasons why Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
novelization differs from typical movie novelizations. For starters, it's
written by Tarantino himself — his first novel after a lifetime spent writing
some of the most fascinating films ever. Beyond that, it differs significantly
from the picture itself, significantly expanding the plot, emphasising
different aspects of the storey, and adding a plethora of material directly
from QT's brain that would never have fit into a single film. Among the alterations is a new
finale, which revolves around a phone call between Rick Dalton (played by
Leonardo DiCaprio in the film) and talented young Lancer actor Trudi (played in
the film by Julia Butters). In truth, the scene was shot for the film, but it
was cut so that Tarantino's history-bending interpretation on the Manson
murders could be shown instead. Tarantino tells Empire in the latest issue,
"There's a reason it's not in the movie." "If you play that
sequence, the game is over." You're on the verge of having to rewind the
movie."
